From the famous line in “The Graduate” encouraging the young man into ‘plastics’ to have a bright economic future, to the recent death of a pilot whale in Thailand due to a “belly full of black plastic bags” (NYT 6/4/18)--18 lbs to be exact-- the impact on our world is profound.

The Sonoma County we know and love might never have been.

By the late 1960s, ranches and farms countywide were zoned and subdivided into 5-acre ranchettes.

Development surged as people streamed into the county on a newly improved Highway 101.

The Coast was a potential Malibu Beach with expensive homes dotting the shoreline and little or no public access.

A corridor of urban sprawl from Healdsburg to Petaluma was in the making, without consideration of environmental impacts or scenic values.

Breeding and killing billions of animals for human consumption requires vast amounts of land, water, and fossil fuels. According to the United Nations, animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all modes of transportation combined, or as high as 51% if greenhouse gases (GHG) from transportation, refrigeration, deforestation, etc, that are typically categorized separately but are a direct consequence of animal agriculture, are taken into account. To reduce our own GHG footprint and set a better example for others, a shift to plantbased foods is essential to preventing a climate catastrophe.

The cannabis story in Sonoma County is a hot ticket item. Communities are being divided, and information - true and false - is spreading through our neighborhoods. So how did we get here? As a cannabis cultivator, advocate, and community member; I’d like to offer my perspective.

One of my favorite pleasures is to tour a vineyard I’m unfamiliar with and especially one with so much history, and in this case, it was courtesy of theGuadagni family.

I love this old English proverb. I have been saying it every April since I was a kid, I guess another aspect of my “Pollyanna” look at life. If we hold out during the discomfort of the rainy season we will be rewarded with beautiful flowers in May. It’s positive thinking, always knowing there is something good to look forward to, the life attitude I like to live by. See you at one of these special events on the Windsor Town Green.

It dawned on me that I’ve neglected to talk about barbera and, to a lesser extent, sangiovese. I thought it might be interesting to try something new and encourage people to step outside what might be their red varietal of choice.

The decision on WHERE cannabis can be grown has only partly been decided as Sonoma County enters into farming and selling this now legal crop in California. People who voted to make this beneficial plant legal so that it can be grown for fiber, medicinal solutions, as well as recreational use, are afraid of WHERE this crop will be grown The ease of stealing and selling it attracts criminals and has caused death to innocent people living near grows.

When discussing the conservation of natural resources within Sonoma County, it’s hard to avoid the elephant in the room. That elephant is our prosperous wine industry. Despite how much wine benefits our local economy, we cannot ignore its negative environmental impacts to our unique and fragile ecosystem.

Since 2004, my husband Doug and I have owned Beekind Honey in Sebastopol. We opened the shop in a very tiny portion of where it exists today. Doug had been beekeeping for seven years when we opened the store, I as always, the beekeeper’s keeper, was convinced that this amazing local honey that Doug and other local Sonoma County beekeepers were collecting had great unique value.
