We opened 10 years ago on the Day of the Dead in honor of my 3 major mentors who led me down this path. My father, Paul Calabi, My teacher, Giovanni Castanoi and the painter Robert McChesney. Time does fly, and we have somehow managed to survive 10 years, showing our eclectic array of decidedly non-trendy art.  We live the same way as our artists, basking in the glow of achieving something special and unique in an increasingly soulless world. The arts are ever more important to maintaining sanity and a sense of meaning in a shrinking and despoiled planet.s

My “Retirement Dream” is to be the artist, musician, and writer I was when I was 15, still dreaming, and before I became responsible for my own survival. Many of the artists you find on annualArt Trails andArt at the Source Open Studio days are people who shared this same experience. They were always creative and dreamed of the day when they would be able to create without the burden of financing their lives. Some rare people actually made a living all along...but they are so rare you would recognize their names.

This past Saturday Nov 16, I attended a very unusual and heartwarming event at REFRAME Hair Gallery  run by Nevuah Rautenberg and Cameron Nairn Wayland the owners. The event  Glamour + Grit: Art Show & CSA Fair, featured women farmers from across Sonoma and Napa Counties. There was a delicious spread of food and wine in the center. The women farmers had set up displays and provided information at each styling booth, with the portrait of each farmer at their farm on the wall behind them.  The photographs of  Loren Hansen Photography  are beautiful and capture the spirit of the women in their farm setting. Visitors could talk with the farmers and sign up for a CSA;  I was surprised to learn from Evan Wiig the communication and membership director of Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), that Every CSA farm in Sonoma and Napa Counties is either woman-owned or co-owned!

Before the main event could begin, there were tickets to raffle off to support GetchuSomeGear, a non-profit that collects coffee gear to supply marginalized or under-paid individuals in the coffee industry. Next, a large group of costumed contestants stood in front of the room, each one named as the onlookers clapped enthusiastically for their favorite entrant. On October 24th in Sebastopol, Retrograde Roasters held their first Latte Art Throwdown at their current location, to a room packed with a colorful collection of inventive costumes.
