The Sonoma County Local Coastal Plan, an integral part of that decades-long preservation effort, is being revisited by county officials, and changes will be made. It will be important to be watchful and mindful that we do not lose what so many have fought to save. Trione-Annadel State Park New Volunteer Training - Saturday, November 2, 2019. Volunteer assignments include these and more: Foot Patrol/Bike Patrol volunteers provide service while hiking/biking in the park (hand out maps, give route suggestions, report trail hazards, pick up litter). Visitor Center Staff provide visitor services on weekends and holidays (prerequisite is that you know the park well). We are always looking for volunteer Hike Leaders and Hike Sweeps. There are also opportunities to provide trail maintenance or help on special projects.

Over the past 9 years, our team has raised over $60,000 for the Swim A Mile fundraiser. On Saturday, October 5th, we’ll dive in to the pool at Mills College, with hundeds of other swimmers, and swim our mile for WCRC. For over 32 years WCRC has served as an advocate for women with cancer and their friends and families, providing services for thousands of people in the Bay Area. 71% of every dollar donated to Swim A Mile goes directly to direct client services.

5th District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins called a meeting to gather neighbors negatively impacted by visitors to Russian River parks each summer. She invited Regional Parks director Bert Whitaker and his staff, Public Works director Johannes Hoevertsz, and our local CHP officers who patrol the Russian River corridor in weekends when the impact is greatest. Residents gathered at the Hollydale Club to listen to what is being done, and add their own ideas about what can and should be done to mitigate impacts.

Free Public Events on Renewing the Rohnert Park Urban Growth Boundary – Measure B. Greenbelt Alliance is sponsoring three free public events in Rohnert Park to educate voters about renewing the city’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) with Measure B on the November 5, 2019 election ballot. As native carnivores, bobcats (Lynx rufus) are an indicator species of ecosystem health. Yet they face growing challenges as their habitat disappears and human impacts increasingly affect their ability to survive. Fortunately, lawmakers and a coalition of organizations are advancing bills through this session of the California State Legislature that, if passed, would protect bobcats from cruel and senseless killing. AB 1254 passed the Assembly and is scheduled to be heard in Senate Appropriations on August 30. If released, it could hit the Senate floor quickly. Residents can contact their senator and urge a ‘Yes’ vote on AB 1254.

The Lower Russian River Trail Feasibility Study has been holding public workshops and meetings since May 2019, to gather input on their plans for a car-free, continuous walking and bicycling trail from Forestville to Jenner along the Lower Russian River corridor. It details the study process and community input, recommended trail alignment and amenities, estimated costs, and offers the next steps to move toward implementation. The Public Draft Study is now available for community review. Please provide your feedback by 5pm on Tuesday, January 21.

An unprecedented 90 percent of voters in the City of Rohnert Park passed Measure B to protect open space and focus growth inside the city’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) for the next 20 years — until the end of 2040. The UGB can only be changed by a vote of the people, with few exceptions. Greenbelt Alliance led the campaign to pass Measure B.
