While the observatory cannot yet open its doors for the public to use its telescopes due to social distancing limitations, docents found another way to create fun, family events outside. Visitors are required to follow Covid-19 precautions including wearing face masks and social distancing from other family groups. The number of participants are also limited to ensure a safe environment. Sign up and pay ahead of time online, to ensure a spot as well as to minimize contact at the event.

A directive that allows park agencies to reopen some parking lots and sports facilities was issued  by Dr. Sundari Mase. The health order means residents can drive to inland parks beginning Wednesday, May 13, 2020. The order keeps Sonoma Coast parking areas closed to prevent crowding at beaches but allows coastal residents to walk or bike to nearby parks during limited hours. Facilities that encourage gatherings or have frequently touched surfaces remain closed. These include playgrounds, dog parks, outdoor gym equipment, picnic areas, drinking fountains and barbecues.

The cabinet-level State body opened the sixth funding round of its Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program (SALC) after its interagency Council approved updated guidelines at its public meeting on Tuesday. SGC invites cities, counties, resource conservation districts, land trusts, California Native American tribes, and other governmental and non-profit entities to apply for the grants.

The UGB is simply a line around the city that protects open space and ag lands. It prevents urbanization and development beyond the boundary without a majority vote of approval by its citizens. The UGB can be revised if needed at any time by going back to the voters.  It gives the community a direct voice in the future of the city. The City of Sonoma is moving forward to renew its existing Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) for another 20 years by placing a ballot measure before voters in November 2020. This is great news for open space and agricultural lands and climate-wise, city-centered growth for the next generation.

Think of birding as a puzzle or mystery and you are the detective. You have to use whatever data you have, be it plumage (feathers), color, a bird song or call, behavior, habitat, size, shape, body type, etc. to deduce the species of bird you're trying to identify. Since we are all cooped up, the kiddos are out of school and everyone needs something exciting to keep ourselves busy and positive, becoming a backyard birder is the perfect new hobby for everyone at any level of proficiency. Thankfully, there are many helpful birder sleuth apps one can use to become a master birder.

From Supervisor Hopkins' office: We are dealing, on an ongoing basis, with the reality that cases are rising and too many people come in that do not respect the health orders. We will have enforcement agencies out all weekend but they have a lot of territory to cover and can’t be everywhere at one time. We encourage you to practice safe-celebrations this weekend. Stay close to home and away from crowds, maintain social distancing, wear masks and sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. And remember fireworks are banned in unincorporated Sonoma County please don’t put your neighbors at risk during wildfire season.

As residents head outside, mosquito experts encourage community members to protect themselves from mosquitoes and the diseases they can spread. West Nile virus is the most prevalent mosquitoborne disease in the U.S. according to the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no human vaccine for West Nile virus, a disease that can cause debilitating cases of meningitis, encephalitis, and even death. West Nile virus isn’t the only mosquito-borne threat, newly established invasive Aedes mosquitoes can transmit viruses such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, all of which are costly to treat and can have long-term health and financial consequences. Check out how you can protect yourself and your home.

The California Coastal Trail (CCT), when completed, will encompass 800 miles of coastline. The Coastal Act mandated that each coastal county and city, as part of developing their own Local Coastal Plan, include the planning and implementation of the California Coastal Trail through their jurisdictions. Sonoma County has done so with considerable success. About two thirds of the county’s 65 miles of the California Coastal Trail has been completed, and planning for the remaining gaps is included in the current Draft Local Coastal Plan. One of the leading organizations in that effort was, and continues to be,Coastwalk/California Coastal Trail Association.

We need to follow the simple rules so we don't force the hand of the County to close the beaches once again.  Because this public health emergency is continuing into the future and the general shelter-in-place order is still in effect, we are asked to continue limiting our activities and our exposure to others. Read on for some specific guidelines for visiting Sonoma Coast beaches – and all of our Regional Parks.

As we start to open up our society again after the long shelter-in-place, let us take a moment to pause. Are we going back to life as we knew it or can we rebuild our schedules with the best outcomes of the shelter in place orders. For example, a picnic basket implies that you are going to go to the beach together (and with the kids!) instead of work or the ball game. There is the expectation of a day in the park, the plaza, or out wine tasting, maybe with friends, a glorious sunset toast, or perhaps a short walk to a quiet hollow by a creek together.
