The world over, we use many different words to describe long distance walking. It’s an age-old tradition that roots all the way back to our ancient ancestors, who trekked across the land as a way of life, a simple exercise in survival.

We all like to go to the beach on a hot summer’s day. We also associate a day at the beach with the presence of “seagulls.” When I was a child growing up in Ohio my family would occasionally go to Lake Erie in the summer. I always felt like I was in a really exotic place because I was surrounded by ‘seagulls.”

FIRE TRUCK ACCESS During emergencies fire trucksmust have clear access to fires. Parked cars that obstruct access can be ticketed or removed. We are having serious problems in neighborhoods close to the Russian River with cars blocking access while visiting beaches. Any obstructions can delay or even prevent adequate emergency operations. The delay could cost someone’s life.

BioBlitzes bring people together to document biodiversity in one place at one time, recording observations of plants and animals using smartphones or digital cameras and uploading results to the biodiversity recording and social networking platform iNaturalist (www.inaturalist.org). These events connect people of all backgrounds to the outdoors, inspire everyone to protect biodiversity, and at the same time generate invaluable data.

Deeply rooted in our minds and hearts is the comfort of a bonfire. It brings out all what came before us and creates thoughts and visions of what lies ahead. I for one can gaze into a campfire for hours. Camping and sitting around the warmth of that campfire with friends and/or family ties us together. To share stories. To tell ‘Tall Tales”. To sing. To create your own fire dance.

In the summer of 2016 I planned an over-the-top bicycle camping trip for my family. I had arranged for a friend to transport the three of us, Renee my wife, Trinity my then 9-year-old, myself, and all our gear to Santa Cruz. We had planned to ride down Highway 1 hugging the coast through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, and finish in San Luis Obispo.

The Sonoma County Water Agency (Water Agency) began inflating its rubber dam on the Russian River near Forestville on Monday, May 21. The rubber dam is a critical component of the Russian River water supply system that provides naturally filtered drinking water to more than 600,000 residents in portions of Sonoma and Marin counties.  The rubber dam will remain inflated through summer and into the fall.

Are you enjoying our spring? Don’t you love the surprise weather we have each day; maybe rain and the next day sun, a day of warmth taking off the jacket, putting the jacket on, bringing the umbrella out, putting it away, building a fire, or closing the wood room down.

Matching Grant Applications Accepted through June 6!
We are pleased to report that considerable interest has been shown in our Matching Grant Program this funding cycle. To allow more time for interested public agencies and nonprofits to apply, we are extending the application deadline from April 30 to Wednesday, June 6, at 5pm. This year, funding through the program can help support recovery efforts in fire-impacted communities through the restoration of habitats, acquisition and development of land for community open space, and other projects. Eligible projects that aid in rebuilding and recovery efforts in affected communities may be given preference. The Matching Grant Program budget for the 2018 cycle is $4 million.

Breaking News: Iconic Berry’s Saw Mill and property in Cazadero are for sale. The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District should take note, as this historic property is just over the hill from the Jenner Headlands Preserve and would complement the Preserve/Pole Mountain acquisitions in so many ways.

Spring on the Sonoma Coast offers residents of the County, as well as visitors, many amazing visual delights - wildflowers everywhere, migrating Pacific Gray Whales, Pacific Harbor Seal pups, especially at the Goat Rock Beach colony, and birds in breeding plumage and sitting on nests on the rocks off the coast that are part of the California Coastal National Monument.

The long-awaited parking lot at the Jenner Headlands Preserve is almost ready for its grand opening. Located 1.5 miles north of Jenner on Coast Highway One, volunteers are busy planting landscaping plants, while work crews put the finishing touches on the infra-structure.

Algae bloom in the lower reaches of the Russian River has been showing itself in alarming abundance this summer. Areas where in the past algae would typically line the shoreline gravel beaches, have seen the bloom cover the entire river surface from shore to shore. The areas above Bridgehaven up to Sheephouse Creek were especially bad.

With great weather heading into fall, it’s the perfect time to get out on your bike. Living here in Sonoma County we are blessed with many different choices. Depending on your mood you can pick from rolling vineyards, steep climbs or twisty coastal roads. One thing I also take into consideration is the location of the ride.

Sonoma County Regional Parks has recruited some assistance for fire prevention and invasive species removal: sheep. A flock of sheep will spend the next five weeks grazing along the Laguna de Santa Rosa Trail near Sebastopol, removing dry vegetation and non-native plant species.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to consider placing on the Nov. 6 ballot a one-eighth-cent sales tax for regional and local park improvements. If approved by voters, the sales tax would support the county and cities with their long-term needs to maintain parks, protect natural resources, reduce wildfire risks, provide health and recreation programs, and open new parks and trails.

Whether you live here on the coast or you are a regular visitor you know the month of July brings the blessed fog onshore and cools us down. The gentle lines of the fog belt come and go, meander up and down the coast lingering with the most refreshing feeling you can imagine, especially when you come down the off the hot hills of the coast.
