But today, on the cente-column-enial of my tenure with The Gazette, I want to do something completely different, something I should have done years ago (and for this failure I am truly sorry). I'm Spot's Spleen. Crisis management is not my only talent. Sure, I store a lot of red blood cells and platelets in my red pulp, but my day job is doing immune monitoring and cleaning the blood. Somebody has to do it, and I take pride in my function as the keeper of the erythron. I maintain the condition of circulating red blood cells, and can remove bits of damaged hemoglobin before sending middle aged red blood cells back into circulation, almost as good as new.

The Value of Embracing Wild Birds and Domestic Cats. Many commord n bispecies are losing ground in their struggle to exist. Two familiar birds which have declined are the Dark-eyed Junco and the Barn Swallow. Juncos are a cute sparrow that comes to feeders. Protect our wild birds while keeping our pets safe. Cats are not part of the natural ecosystems and they kill small birds, like the Dark-eyed Junco. Keeping cats indoors is also good for their own safety. Photo by Dieter Joel Jagnow from FreeImages

People like to believe that being a veterinarian is all about animals: helping animals, saving their lives, and soothing their hurts — and it is. Except when it’s not. I’m in my 38th year of veterinary practice. I’ve learned that every animal has a Person. Hearts are intertwined. Dogs are zen masters who ACCEPT what life brings them. Humans… not so much. When you accept responsibility for helping an Animal, you have to accept the invisible bond that ties them to their Person. You must accept that a part of your responsibility is to help Person
