This is the case right now as Sonoma County government embarks on an update of the Local Coastal Plan (LCP). Most people have heard something about the Coastal Commission, that state government body which regulates land use and development of the coast while also protecting the coastal environment and guarding the public right to access the coast.  The Coastal Commission was established by a grass roots political movement in the 1970’s when in 1972 California voters passed Proposition 20, the Coastal Initiative.

5th District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins called a meeting to gather neighbors negatively impacted by visitors to Russian River parks each summer. She invited Regional Parks director Bert Whitaker and his staff, Public Works director Johannes Hoevertsz, and our local CHP officers who patrol the Russian River corridor in weekends when the impact is greatest. Residents gathered at the Hollydale Club to listen to what is being done, and add their own ideas about what can and should be done to mitigate impacts.
