Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.

May 25, 2020

GUERNEVILLE…what’s rollin on the river… Well not much.  Maybe just maybe by the time this column comes out, my information will be obsolete and we will be back to normal.  I hope this is not our new normal.  When I was young my Dad use to tell me things that happened in his lifetime (he was born, in 1918).  In my mind I use to think yeah right Daddy that could never have happened.  Sometimes I would ask him why this happened.  He would answer “Baby just keep on living”.  At the time I thought that was the craziest response he could have said but I never questioned or said anything to him.  Well here we are.  Who would have ever guessed we would be in this position today.  Now I will be telling my Grandkids about this pandemic and everything that happened, they are going to think, “yeah right Grandma”.  I will understand their nonbelief as some of this is hard to believe as an adult.  My response will be, “baby just keep on living”.  The good thing is we are finally seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel. We now have the 5&10 open to curb side service, Stumptown Nursery and Sonoma Nesting Company is open and you can walk in to pick your own plants.  One step at a time.

A continued Shout Out to ALL our frontline workers.  Their continued perseverance through this is amazing and we will be forever grateful.  Thank goodness for our local restaurants, Betty’s Spaghetti Wed & Fri 4-7,  Big Bottom-Mon & Wed 9-3, Th-Sun 8-5, Boon & Brot Wed-Sun 4-8, Main Street Su-Sat 12-9, Pat’s International Fri-Tu 11-7, Roadhouse Sa-Su 9-9, Mo-Fr 11-9, Smart Pizza Su-Sa 11:30-9, Stumptown Wed-Su 12-7, Timberline Fr-Su 4-8.  We have a new restaurant that has opened in the old Garden Grill Called “The Oxbow”, Wed-Sun 11-6.  I want to stop by soon as I hear I have BBQ rib competition.

Congratulations to some businesses who are retiring and going on to enjoy life.  Country Tires and Jimmy Longs small engine repair.  Also, Bruce Johnson, President of FROG and so many other community services he volunteered for is retiring.  We thank all of you for your service and wish you happiness in whatever it is you choose to do next!

Have you ever thought about writing?  Telling your life story?  SRJC is offering a class for the Russian River area on Tuesday’s at 2:00pm on zoom video conferencing.  This is for beginners to veteran.  This is a fun supportive event.  You will get feedback on your writing.  If interested email:

A message from Karin Moss, Russian River Chamber: The Art Walks and the Thursday concerts are on hold just like all other big gatherings.  We are, of course, hopeful that the quarantine will lift soon but wait for regular updates from the Health Department.  We want all businesses that are open to let us know so that we can list them on our website and include in our newsletter to notify the public.  The Chamber, has been very proactive with our members and the community at large.  We are regularly providing updates on our websites and social media about grant opportunities, economic development opportunities and providing webinars FREE to the public on subjects that range from setting up a website, e-commerce and tips for using Zoom.  Above all, I salute everybody for their ability to Keep On Keepin' On (as we used to say in the groovy 70's!)

The Russian River Senior Center now has Tau Chi and SRJC writing classes via Zoom, see Facebook for times and logon info. They also have Brown bag lunches to go on Wednesdays 11-1, and chilled meals to go on Wednesday’s and Friday’s 11-1.  The chilled meals are a five pack and it’s first come first served.  They love seeing everyone when they come!

Happy Father’s Day to all of you!  Have a great day with the family!

So that’s what’s “rollin on the river”.   I leave you with a quote,

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.
Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
