Monte Rio has seen natural disaster before but this flood was a Big One. While many escaped unscathed, there were businesses and homes that experienced severe damage. But our community spirit is strong and we come together to help one another in times such as these.

Will we see this as an opportunity to change the way we live and do business, or will the next flood just be a rinse and repeat? This time around it was a very local response. Business owners were out there doing what needed to be done day one. Our supervisor Lynda Hopkins fought to get us relief funds, so we could clean up and recover. Our county Board of Supervisors were there for us. First responders and neighbors did whatever was needed. As President of ts, I am proud of the work of Jeniffer Wertz hitting the streets immediately after the flood handing out Safeway gift cards. She was also without power or propane heat for a week and took time off her job to make a difference.

Driving along River Road west through Forestville, Rio Nido, Guerneville into Monte Rio is going through a flood war zone with piles of debris stacked on the side of the road ready for pickup this week. Curbside collection will be provided to residents impacted by the flood in the unincorporated lower Russian River and will take place daily from March 11 – March 15, 2019 with a final sweep for remaining items from March 18 – 22, 2019.

The County of Sonoma will host a community meeting on Sunday, March 3, to discuss the impacts of recent storms and share information on how to get started with the recovery process. The meeting will be 2 to 4 p.m. at El Molino High School, 7050 Covey Road, Forestville.

It seems Monte Rio has taken over Cazadero as the second rainiest place in Sonoma after Venado. Now it’s time to move on to Spring and new beginnings!  There have been a lot of changes recently on the food front. Winter is always hard on local restaurants and many have closed or changed hands. For some after dinner entertainment head over to Curtain Call Theater for Spike Heels, March 1-23. The play is about women’s issues in the workplace.

It's a big deal on The River. The Lower Russian River area has wanted a voice of influence at the Board of Supervisors and now, thanks to Fifth District Supervisor Lynd Hopkins, the first public meeting will be held February 25 at Guerneville Elementary School. The public is welcome and encouraged to be involved in making decisions about the present and future of the Lower River Communities which extend from Forestville to Cazadero/Duncans Mills.

The new bridge is moving forward. The latest preferred placement will have the bridge going in next to Noel’s Automotive. The County is in charge of the project; however, Caltrans administers the Federal funds. The anticipated construction timeline is summer 2021 and 2022. Noise impacts should be minimal as there will not be piling drillings. The old bridge will be removed due to high on-going maintenance expenses if it were to remain as a pedestrian bridge. Infrastructure maintenance is an ongoing issue for many of our roads.

The MAC candidates’ town hall meeting in Guerneville went very well. There was a total of 28 people running for district positions. It was great to see such a turnout of people willing to volunteer and serve, and to serve for the greater good, not just for their individual district. It’s a sign of our changing demographics and it’s awesome that we have reached this place.
