The Pink opened in 1937. It is known as an historic roadside watering hole. You probably noticed the new siding and new roof. The Pink will also have a large balcony out the back. Renovations should be done soon and then the only thing left is acquiring a liquor license. Not easy to obtain, but Tom is persistent and if it takes the whole hamlet appearing at ABC in Sacramento, I’m sure we can arrange the buses. What do I love about Monte Rio? The vision to bring it back to some semblance of its heyday. And unless we’re rebuilding a seven-story hotel downtown, raise your glass because The Pink is our ticket! Thank you, Tom.

The Lower Russian River Trail Feasibility Study has been holding public workshops and meetings since May 2019, to gather input on their plans for a car-free, continuous walking and bicycling trail from Forestville to Jenner along the Lower Russian River corridor. It details the study process and community input, recommended trail alignment and amenities, estimated costs, and offers the next steps to move toward implementation. The Public Draft Study is now available for community review. Please provide your feedback by 5pm on Tuesday, January 21.

I’ve seen many pictures of Monte Rio in its heyday, but last month I saw some I hadn’t seen before. One was a Press Democrat article from May 1931 “Johnny’s Casino at Monte Rio Opens”. The article discussed the formal grand opening, the featured live musicians, the “dance and dine” club, and I counted 38 congratulatory ads from local businesses.

As we transition from fire to flood season, let’s hope 2020 brings us changes to the status quo on many levels. One large positive from this past year has been the outpouring of support to help those of us effected by the flood and fire evacuations. I am astounded by the generosity of people donating to help our area.

I reported a few months ago on new regulations for Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems based on inaccurate information that redwood boxes would be acceptable, unlike cesspools. I have recently been informed that the regulators consider them both the same. If you have a redwood “Septic Tank” meaning dual chambers and a leachfield you are probably OK. The Monte Rio Recreation & Park District Board is looking to appoint a replacement for outgoing board members. Robert Gray has sold Cuts on the Green to Lisa Parmeter. The name will now be The Shop

I just returned from a long Caribbean cruise with an after stop in South Florida and Wilton Manors. While the cruise was originally going to Cuba, at least the redirected cruise had an excursion to stunning Trunk Bay beach in St. John. A rare long vacation really can help expand your perspective on life.
