County has Adopted the Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) Manual, version 7 dated 8/15/19. We also have a new ombudsperson, Alisha O’Loughlin, who can assist residents regarding septic upgrades. Next summer you will be asked what type of system you have. Systems will have to be inspected every 5 years (you pay for inspection).  In the Fifth District Office, Elise VanDyne has taken over the field rep position from Amie Windsor. Elise was most recently the Executive Director for Russian River Chamber. District Director Susan Upchurch will be retiring to her home on Whidbey Island near Seattle in October after 11 years of service.

Here's what's happening in Monte Rio this May. Many small businesses are reopening for the first time after the floods, Monte Rio's Fire Chief won an award, and a Shakespeare production is coming to town.

Monte Rio has seen natural disaster before but this flood was a Big One. While many escaped unscathed, there were businesses and homes that experienced severe damage. But our community spirit is strong and we come together to help one another in times such as these.

Will we see this as an opportunity to change the way we live and do business, or will the next flood just be a rinse and repeat? This time around it was a very local response. Business owners were out there doing what needed to be done day one. Our supervisor Lynda Hopkins fought to get us relief funds, so we could clean up and recover. Our county Board of Supervisors were there for us. First responders and neighbors did whatever was needed. As President of ts, I am proud of the work of Jeniffer Wertz hitting the streets immediately after the flood handing out Safeway gift cards. She was also without power or propane heat for a week and took time off her job to make a difference.

We may be getting WCCS Empowerment Center classes at the MRRPD Youth Center building next to the tennis courts. The Empowerment Center will have classes mid-day mid-week. Classes are currently being held in the Russian River Senior Center and the Empowerment Center needs more space. Update on Noise Ordinance:  There has been a lot of traction on this recently with over 300 petition signatures in support of a noise ordinance, as well as social media and a local news article on the subject. Russian River Alliance, along with some of its member groups, started this initiative last summer in response to public requests.

The biggest show of the year, the Monte Rio Variety Show will take place at the Monte Rio Amphitheater on Thursday July 25. Join us for a special evening of music, comedy and theater. With a uniquely wide range of acts, from Jazz to Classical, from Country to Rock, the Monte Rio Variety Show has been a Russian River tradition for 108 years.

Come join the festivities on July 5th at Monte Rio Beach as we celebrate Independence Day Monte Rio style beginning with the Big Rocky Games for children from 12-4 followed by a float parade at dusk. See the famous Monte Rio water curtain which shows images of the American Flag projected off the bridge and then get ready to view an amazing fireworks show - the best on the river - bar none.

William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ is saturated with a mystical, charged atmosphere of shrouded moors and supernatural omens echoing through castle halls. In this unique adaptation by Avilynn Pwyll, magick takes center stage through the antics of witches and Lady Macbeth’s dark arts.

I was on time to the Park & Rec board meeting when I saw a guy planting the flowers at the Welcome to Vacation Wonderland sign. I stopped. The board meeting could start without me. I thanked Ed Brochu, who lives in Cazadero, for beautifying our gateway and asked him why was he doing this? He said his mother, Nola Dianne Abbott, had passed away recently in November in Houston. Park & Rec is also still working on trying to get Monte Rio a public EV charging station. Technology is advancing so rapidly. When I bought my EV a few years ago, VW was not able to deliver the car I wanted with Driver Assist package. With fire season approaching, updates on installation of air quality sensors. As previously reported Cazadero Fire has approved Russian River Alliance’s request to install local sensors to protect residents and school children. Russian River Fire did not see it in their purview to do this and decided not to approve the request. A follow-up request has been sent to MRFPD for an update on their end.

Recovery. It’s good to see our area cleaned up and most businesses re-opened with other businesses re-opening soon in time for the tourist high season. The county did a great job helping us when we needed it the most. Hopefully this will be another strong tourist season. Understanding how our government works is always a moving target. It seems that whenever you think things are better, under-control, and on auto-pilot, they aren’t. While criminal activity is up in Guerneville as well as Monte Rio, our Sheriff’s department is cutting back folks in the Guerneville sub-station due to budget cuts again.

Congratulations to Monte Rio Fire Chief Steve Baxman who is the recipient of the April North Bay Spirit Award. The award is given to celebrate and recognize people who make a difference in our community. No one can dispute his dedication and commitment to not just Monte Rio but surrounding communities as well. I’m sure everyone on the river has a “Steve story”- I have several myself. He has served Monte Rio as a volunteer for so long that he predates the 911 emergency call systems. As a result many residents have his phone number and call him FIRST before calling 911. Monte Rio without Steve Baxman would be like Bedford Falls without George Bailey! A grateful community sends a big THANK YOU to Chief Baxman and all firefighters and first responders.
