The Guerneville River Parkwill become a tent city for 25 homeless people that will be managed by West County Community Services (WCCS) with 24/7 supervision and will be drug free. It will be open until 12/1/20 when the downtown shelter reopens at the Vets Hall. The idea is to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 among the homeless community while providing them a “navigation center with wrap around services” with a goal to get them into permanent housing. The Guerneville community response was once again not positive.

As a fragile economy in general, and usually with the highest unemployment rate in the county, being shut down is the last thing we need. The latest unemployment figures for April came out today while I’m finishing this column. Monte Rio comes in at 45.6%! What is the county doing to help reopen our businesses and provide economic development support to our community? The devastation to our community is, and unfortunately will be, long lived. More needs to be done for Monte Rio.  We can still get out, support our businesses, and safely enjoy the enduring beauty that is Monte Rio. It’s time to shine a light and celebrate Monte Rio’s return.

I am hoping businesses will be able to open at least on a limited basis sooner rather than later. We know what steps work. We know how to social distance. We can have more people telecommuting, we can have split days at work so only half the workforce shows up daily. We can limit the number of customers inside stores and restaurants. We can accept that there will be no large events or gatherings until we have a viable vaccine or most of us have developed immunity if that is possible. Technology has worked pretty well so far as far as lessening the need for in person meetings, although Zoom has provided some entertainment along the way. We can determine what businesses and places are more or less a threat. REMEMBER THIS: Trump is for reopening the economy. As more time goes on and people remain on lockdown, stressed out, can’t pay mortgage or rent, who do you think they will vote for? The guy that wants them to be able to get back to work and support their families or for democrats that seem to want to take the you can’t be safe enough approach?

I’m cautiously optimistic that maybe going forward we will have better leadership in our government and that the world will start working together as one planet, one people. Maybe there will be less hate, selfishness, and divisiveness going forward. People working together for the greater good. Last month I traveled for the 4th time to Cuba. You know part of the “Troika of Terror”, yet they are the ones sending doctors, nurses, and medicines they developed to Italy as well as other countries. Talking with them one on one about politics and their families, and you quickly learn that they are more than our neighbors. They are family.

Monte Rio will have our first public charger by the end of this year.Monte Rio will have our first public charger by the end of this year. Several businesses are up for sale after a difficult year: Applewood Inn priced at $5.5 million, the Rio Nido Lodge priced at $1.5 million, and of course our own Rio Theater priced at $895,000.

The Pink opened in 1937. It is known as an historic roadside watering hole. You probably noticed the new siding and new roof. The Pink will also have a large balcony out the back. Renovations should be done soon and then the only thing left is acquiring a liquor license. Not easy to obtain, but Tom is persistent and if it takes the whole hamlet appearing at ABC in Sacramento, I’m sure we can arrange the buses. What do I love about Monte Rio? The vision to bring it back to some semblance of its heyday. And unless we’re rebuilding a seven-story hotel downtown, raise your glass because The Pink is our ticket! Thank you, Tom.
