The City Council scheduled two special meetings to determine the community process to address concerns regarding police policies and racism. The agendas and videos of the zoom meetings held on June 23 and June 30 are on the City’s website on the “Meetings” page. Announcing the meetings, Mayor Patrick Slayter said, “We realize that all of the public’s concerns and all of the issues cannot be addressed in just one or two meetings. Working with City Staff, he’s created a door hanger summarizing key information. It will be hand-delivered to each residential address in town, importantly saving the cost of postage when the City’s revenue is in freefall. The door hanger includes a “sticky note” explaining how it was delivered. Our Senior Center will deliver the first 150 to every meal recipient in their programs.City Staff is available to help local business implement curbside pick-up service for their customers. The City’s website features a new COVID-19 Resource and Information Section:  https://ci.sebastopol.ca.us/Article/Novel-Coronavirus-(COVID-19)-Resource-Page .  The website also offers support for people who have or think they may have COVID-19, and for those confined at home who need help with shopping or other tasks. Soon, if not already, there will be a list of stores that offer shopping hours for seniors, at-risk customers, and first responders. Links will direct Spanish-speakers to the appropriate SoCoEmergency pages.

On January 7, 2020 the City Council approved the creation of a Climate Action Sub-Committee. The new Climate Action Sub-Committee will include a cross-section of community members representing all sectors, working together to make recommendations to the Council on specific future actions to address the climate crisis. This initial group will write a work plan for a later, more formal “standing” Sub-Committee.

The City of Sebastopol has some challenges, but, like building a house, we are working on them with measured, steady progress. Funds are being accumulated from a variety of sources to continue maintaining and improving our roads. A number of housing projects are being discussed, some with delight and others with dread, but that’s why the public process is the way it is; everyone gets a chance to speak. The aging underground water utilities serving all residences and businesses in the City require maintenance and upgrades, and the City has developed a long-range plan to provide for adequate funding of these vital systems.
