‘Eurydice,’ performed at Main Stage West in Sebastopol, may have the reputation of tragic love, but inSarah Ruhl’s reimagined legend, the tender connection between father and daughter is what gleams beyond the Underworld’s restrictive rules that the dead should not remember or yearn for lost family.John Craven’s Father takes a central role, with childlike gentleness toward Eurydice, determined to keep her grounded and aware in a madcap world of chanting stones and creaking caverns where no one is allowed to cry.

Mr. Music (aka Jim Corbett) has been bringing music to Sebastopol since 1972, when he volunteered “to do music,” he says, in his five-year-old daughter’s class. The seeds of that experience eventually flowered into the Peacetown concert series, every summer Wednesday in Sebastopol’s Ives Park, 5 – 8 p.m.

When Greg Jacobs worked in the Sonoma County District Attorney's office, he was on a committee that reviewed all child deaths in the county every month. There were too many drownings in bathtubs, swimming pools, Lake Sonoma and the Russian River. All were preventable.  Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for kids 14 and under, nationally and worldwide. And now pediatricians are recommending swim lessons for one-year-olds.

Billboards warning of child sex trafficking remind Sonoma County residents that the devastating abuse of minors is closer to home than we prefer to imagine. Main Stage West’s ‘Blackbird’ is a challenging play addressing the topic of pedophilia in a stark, disturbing conversation. A young woman has returned to face the man who took advantage of her as a young teenager, searching for closure. Their stilted meeting transforms into an honest, painful exchange that is chilling in accuracy and content.

Since 2004, my husband Doug and I have owned Beekind Honey in Sebastopol. We opened the shop in a very tiny portion of where it exists today. Doug had been beekeeping for seven years when we opened the store, I as always, the beekeeper’s keeper, was convinced that this amazing local honey that Doug and other local Sonoma County beekeepers were collecting had great unique value.
